It’s difficult to narrow down songwriters to “Top Three.” I could probably name my top three in different genres.
In the Christian music world, I’d have to say that my top three songwriters have been Keith Green, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Chris Tomlin. In the rock world, I’d have to say my favs have been Phil Collins and Elton John.
For all of these, the reasons I’d choose them over others is similar…
1. They have all been pioneers of a sort in their arena.
2. Most of them are able to produce truly creative music again and again without it “all sounding the same.” (Minus Chris Tomlin)
3. Some of Tomlin’s stuff DOES sound the same, but he’s mastered a niche and doesn’t go too far outside of the box for this. I appreciate that about Chris. His stuff is always singable, simple, and solid. He’s like an “Old Faithful” for Modern Worship Music.
